A non-profit organization with an operating budget of $3.5m, we have a diverse and global team of 15 staff members. Based primarily at the Open Gov Hub co-working space in Washington D.C., we also have colleagues in Africa, Europe and South America. Position Description

We are seeking an experienced Managing Director of Finance and Operations to join our dynamic team, working out of the Open Gov Hub. Working closely with our Executive Director as part of our management team, the person appointed will have overall responsibility for ensuring that we manage and make use of our resources in ways that support the implementation of our strategy. This is a leadership position with an opportunity to make your mark; developing a plan to improve the ways in which we manage our finance and operations, and building and leading a team to deliver on that plan.

The person appointed will have specific responsibilities as regards the management of our financial resources, and associated contracts and grants. This is our highest priority. They will also have oversight responsibilities as regards operations, including human resources, information technology and knowledge management, and for ensuring we comply with legal and regulatory requirements. Our Managing Director of Finance and Operations will recruit and manage a Finance and Operations associate, as well as any outsourced assistance that might be required.

The person appointed will also be responsible for financial management and operations as regards the Open Gov Hub, a nonprofit social enterprise that we jointly manage with Development Gateway. The Open Gov Hub provides exciting opportunities and poses interesting challenges related to our long-term real estate obligations, a revenue model that is driven by payments that members make for shared services including office space, and relationships with a wide range of vendors.

Strategy, planning and management:: Take overall responsibility for ensuring that our finance and operations functions support the implementation of our strategy, enabling us to plan and manage effectively. This will include managing a junior colleague and sourcing additional assistance to complement the skills of the incoming Managing Director (20%).

Financial management: Implement, review and improve our systems for managing our financial resources, with a focus on the following elements (80%):

  • Strategic financial planning, including budgeting, forecasting and cash flow analysis
  • Managing grants, sub-granting and contracts, including for complex multi-year grants involving multiple partners
  • Billing and bookkeeping, including monthly close-out
  • Financial reporting – for management team, project leads, board and donors
  • Audit and compliance – coordinating all audit activities and ensuring compliance with relevant requirements and internal controls
  • Supporting project level financial management, fundraising and business development

The ideal candidate

We are looking for a proactive leader, with the vision, confidence and ability to drive and support continuous improvement in our policies and systems for finance and operations. The person appointed will be highly organized, with the ability to see the bigger picture but also to ensure that the small details are dealt with correctly. They will also be a collaborative team player, excited to work at an organization that values curiosity, humility and inclusivity, with an enthusiasm to respond to colleagues’ needs, and the ability to communicate clearly about complicated financial issues with colleagues, board members and funders.

Experience and skills

  • 10-12 years progressively responsible experience in financial management and operations, particularly nonprofit management, in the US context
  • Strategy, planning and management: Demonstrated ability to contribute to senior management discussions and decision-making, to manage support staff and to effectively outsource any additional assistance that may be required.
  • Financial management: Demonstrated first-rate skills across the board of nonprofit financial management. This should include excellent abilities as regards financial modeling, budgeting, managing grants and contracts, accounting, reporting and the management of audit processes. Experience with managing grants, and sub-grants, involving the UK’s FCDO would be a plus.
  • Operations management: Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a plan to meet Global Integrity’s needs as regards human resources, information technology & knowledge management, and risk management, legal responsibilities and compliance.

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or similar essential, with MBA or MPA preferred
  • CPA or CFA appreciated and preferred, but not essential – mindset, experience and skills are more important than specific qualifications
  • Legal right to work in the United States.

Salary and Benefits

Global Integrity offers a competitive benefits package including health and disability benefits, as well as a modest life insurance policy, and currently pays 100% of the premiums associated with those benefits. The organization also provides generous paid time off, contributes to employees’ retirement accounts and provides for a transit benefit.

While we will require our Managing Director for Finance and Operations to work out of the Open Gov Hub in Washington D.C. – a brand new space that we developed and is a great place to work – we do offer flexible working options.
