Reporting, transparently – Reflections shared with the Hewlett Foundation

Grantees’ reports to funders are rarely shared with the public. We believe that sharing successes and failures can support learning and reflection that helps to strengthen the effectiveness of organizations facing similar challenges. It can also support greater accountability, to funders, and perhaps more importantly to those who that funding is intended to benefit. We’d even go so far as to suggest that funders might encourage such transparency, while also making sure that their reporting requirements are reasonable.

The latest report we produced for the Hewlett Foundation provides a clear, concise and honest reflection on Global Integrity’s work over the course of the last year, (see also our recent feedback on the Hewlett Foundation’s transparency, participation and accountability strategy). Our report covers three main areas: projects; feedback, strategy and learning; and resources, management and governance.

  • On projects, we outline our work with partners on a number of overlapping themes: responses to the COVID-19 pandemic; governance, corruption and kleptocracy; open data and accountability; service delivery, accountability and corruption; and as regards the Open Gov Hub.
  • On feedback, strategy and learning, we reflect on the ways in which we might strengthen our use of feedback, the evolution of our strategy, the challenges that we have faced in prioritizing organizational learning, and our plans for better delivering on our commitment to make listening and learning central to our ways of working.
  • On resources, management and governance, we reflect on the financial challenges and uncertainties we’ve faced, the relationships we’ve built with new funders, the capacity challenges that the team has faced and the progress we have made in addressing those, and our efforts to further strengthen the diversity and effectiveness of our board.

We are looking to the future with confidence. We face significant challenges, including as regards the Open Gov Hub and significant reductions in core funding. However, with a stronger team, exciting projects and partnerships, and significant improvements in our capacity to manage resources effectively and to leverage data and learning to support our organizational effectiveness, we are in a good position to enhance the effectiveness of what we do.
